The Huntley Brown Foundation recently collaborated with the Love Foundation and Muzcinet to offer virtual beginner keyboard lessons for individuals ranging from ages 11-50 years old. Following the successful completion of the program, we had the opportunity to interview Aaron from Muzcinet to gain insights into the program’s overall success and his experience as an instructor.
| Aaron’s enthusiasm was evident as he praised the collaborative effort that made the program a success. The teamwork between local leaders and those overseas created a smooth learning environment, allowing students to not only meet their goals but also foster a genuine excitement for learning music. Aaron was impressed by how well the virtual format supported student engagement. He mentioned that the familiarity of the songs played a key role in keeping students interested. The use of technology, especially having Akeem, an on-site facilitator, move around with a phone camera to show students’ hand positions, was particularly helpful. This enabled Aaron to provide real-time feedback, enhancing the virtual learning experience. While the virtual format presented a few challenges, such as audio issues and latency, Aaron found that the structure of the class remained consistent. Despite these minor hurdles, the program maintained its momentum, and students continued to progress. Aaron was impressed by the rapid improvement of the students. Many began with little to no prior experience but showed remarkable progress, demonstrating that even in a virtual setting, music education could be highly effective. Looking ahead, Aaron suggested a proactive approach to future sessions by providing students with learning materials in advance. This would allow them to come to class more prepared, improving the overall experience. Aaron’s most significant takeaway was the realization of the global potential for music education through technology. The virtual format opened doors for students in distant locations to learn and grow musically, sparking excitement about the possibilities for future programs. This musical collaboration has proven to be an inspiring and innovative approach to music education, showcasing the power of technology to bridge geographical gaps and bring the joy of music to students worldwide. |
